How to Prepare for Your Child's Exam
Before you come to our offices, we have a few helpful tips to prepare you and your child. While this is an important landmark in our young patients' development, they should feel completely relaxed and in no way overwhelmed about visiting the dentist.
We have found that the best way to prepare your child for a dental appointment is to treat it like any other regular daily activity you might do, such as grocery shopping or going to the bank. It is important that you neither undercut or overdramatize dental appointments. Your child will recognize your mood about this visit and usually emulate it, so we encourage you to speak about it casually, but honestly. Once you reach our offices, our professionals can handle any of your child's questions or concerns.
Once your child enters Children's Dental of Waltham, our entire team is ready to help create a stress-free, enjoyable appointment. Each of our team members has extensive experience helping acclimate children to our office.
What to Expect from Our Office
From our team's specialized training to the amenities in our office, Children's Dental of Waltham is equipped to help introduce your child to dental healthcare. Our waiting room is outfitted with a Nintendo GameCube, an iPad, and a variety of other toys and electronics to keep your child entertained while you fill out paperwork and prepare for the exam.
If your child is experiencing any concern or anxiety once you enter our office, our friendly front office team and dental care team will help answer their questions and make them feel comfortable until they enter our exam room. If necessary, our team member will come out to speak with your child in the waiting room and escort them back to a treatment room.
What to Expect during the Exam
Once they enter our exam rooms, you children will likely be interested in the many tools, equipment, and amenities. Our dentists are happy to explain any of these features to your children and help them acclimate to their surroundings. If your child is 24 months old or younger, we have found through many patient visits that it is best if he or she sits on your lap during this introductory exam. Older children can usually sit in the chair themselves.
In general, the point of this visit is to help your child understand basic dentistry and help them feel comfortable during future examinations. Our dentists can usually recognize obvious decay or cavities through a simple visual exam at this time. If your child is happy and comfortable, we may continue with an exam including cleaning, X-rays, and fluoride treatments. If at any point your child is uneasy or afraid, we will stop the visit and help calm them down.
One of the most important aspects of this exam is the education you and your child will receive. We will provide a toothbrush for your child and demonstrate proper cleaning techniques to continue oral hygiene upkeep at home.
